Students Get The Edge From Edgecam

Engineering students at Amrita University in India are finding that being trained on the market-leading Edgecam CAM software is helping them to get a better start in their careers. 

The University’s School of Engineering provides substantial training on Edgecam for their students. Professor M. Elangovan, Head of CAD/CAM at the Mechanical Engineering and CAD/CAM Centre, says: “Being at the manufacturing hub in Coimbatore, we definitely feel that students can use this software to further their careers.

“Some students have even opted to change their career plans and moved into manufacturing after Edgecam training showed them what a powerful tool it is.” The University’s Edgecam software and training is supplied by Kriatec Services, which provides all Edgecam software manufacturing modules and training for industry and education across India. Professor Elangovan says it is vital that their students have exposure to additional, practical skills required in industry, such as proficiency in software, in addition to their academic qualifications.

Amrita University Kriatec Edgecam“We felt our students would have an edge over students who have not trained on Edgecam, so we asked Kriatec to carry it out for us. It is extremely user-friendly and helps students to better understand the concepts of CNC machining, as it gives them greater exposure to the CAD/CAM content on the features, and the tooling requirements.”

Meant primarily for the mechanical and aerospace engineering departments, the software is used by both undergraduate and graduate students. Two batches of training have already been completed involving more than 40 students, including Saravananan a first year student of M.Tech. who has completed over 40 hours of learning about Edgecam.

“The knowledge I’ve obtained gives me greater confidence,” he says. “I’ve gained a broader insight into manufacturing techniques, and I’ll definitely be more technically competitive with this training.”

Kriatec’s Instructional animations enabled Saravananan to better understand the software and help him correct mistake while machining a product. Also, the wide range of data helped him work better with various CAD files and drawings. “I applaud the efforts of the faculty and staff who deployed this software in our campus, and special thanks are due to those who helped me learn it.

“It will definitely help me in my career.”

B.Tech students echoed Saravananan’s sentiments. Naveen Vishnu S, a second-year B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering) student, said: “Edgecam helped me to learn more about the manufacturing field. The training was very useful.”

The Edgecam training is part of the department’s comprehensive student-centric learning approach, designed to add significant value to the students’ understanding through workshops, assignments, seminars, projects and independent study.

It brings in a formal method of familiarising students with industrial practices, helping them to apply their lecture room knowledge to live industrial situations. The labs and computing facilities are available to students until late at night every working day.
